Diskriter Hospital
I was considering working for Diskriter on the hospital account in Florida. There are lots of comments in the archives, but I was wondering if anybody has recent experience with the account manager and that account. It seems like a revolving door, and I want to avoid becoming part of that action. I want the hospital work and insurance, but is it flexible enough? Do they train well? How's the pay? Would my boss be available to me? Any advice would be appreciated. I am deciding between them and TransTech. Thanks

There is a BIG difference between working for Diskriter and working for a hospital through Diskriter. I've done both and there's no comparison.

Florida Hospital Diskriter Position sm
I have been looking through the archives.. I was interested in applying to the Diskriter Florida hospital position but I had heard that you had to take a drug test, credit check, criminal background check and a pre-employment physical.
Is that true? Especially about the preemployment physical. I just find that completely weird..
Any companies out there that offer the hospital benefits besides Diskriter
I currently work in-house a hospital but they do not have at-work positions and I would like ot work at home so I wondered if there were other companies and/hospitals that hire at-home MTs with full benefits....besides Diskriter as I have not heard a lot of good news about them and it makes me nervous to apply.

It is weird. I worked for the Florida Hospital thru Diskriter.... SM
back in 2005 when Diskriter first landed the gig. I had to take a drug test, see my personal doctor for a physical and have him fill a very long and involved form, and get a TB test all for a facility I would never set foot in! It took three long weeks for me to get through all the red tape and actually start the job.
The work was okay, but it ran out and you had no secondary account because you were employed by the hospital. So if you wanted a backup account, then you had to go through more red tape to actually be an employee of Diskriter too and there was a bunch of legal mumbo jumbo that came with that because Diskriter was managing the transcription department for this hospital and the hospital had a contract that said that Diskriter could not put the hospital's employees on Diskriter accounts without express consent from the hospital.
The supervisor of the hospital employees was employed by Diskriter and was incompetent. We weren't able to get sample reports, normals, etc. out of her. We always got the standard I'll look into that or It's in the works. It seemed she had no contact with the hospital HIM department at all. However, they could have a new person in that position now. Like I said it was all brand spanking new back then.
Oh and your benefits were out of Florida. So unless you're planning on flying into Florida to see a doctor or have an operation, you're basically screwed. The bennies may have changed too by now though -- so who knows.
After three months, I just decided it was all just too much and left. All the hoops I jumped through to get the job and then to have the job be such a disappointment was just irritating!

You cant beat the benefits and that is why I chose hospital. You get PTO, holiday pay, downtime pay, and sick time. The insurance is one of the best out there.

interesting, Betsy. I haven't had that opportunity and just assumed a large part of the bad behavior here was rooted in stresses from the economic and industry uncertainties of the times.
Could the character of that department have been set by one or two dominant people?
I'll be watching this thread hopefullly for experience-based observations of thoughtful people.
My experience with Diskriter.
1. What was said below about the IT people monitoring your use of the internet is true. You visit a site that's not what they consider a "medical reference for work" and you're ripped up one side and down another.
2. I was on a hospital account where I was actually an employee of the hospital itself with Diskriter being the middle-man/consulting service, who managed the MTs for the hospital. Sounded great and it was at first, but the account manager was a micromanager and let the hospital walk all over her for even the smallest thing and then would over-react and threaten people with termination for the most minute reasons.
If this manager had stood up to the hospital from the get-go and let them know that they were being unreasonable bullies and she wasn't going to put up with that crap, things would have been fine but that was not the case.
I wouldn't work there if I were you. Too much hassle.

My Diskriter experience
I briefly was hired to work for Diskriter on February 13. Because I am an Andrews grad with experience, I also had 2 other jobs and 3 more opportunites coming up. I took the advise of the MTs on this board and made a wise decision. I first accepted the job, then I took my 2 week training time to review the company. Before I started, I got a bad feeling about the company after speaking with my supervisor. I was told that I was allowed to train for 2 weeks. During my 2 weeks, I could make macros, get familiar with the account specifics and computer, etc. After the 2 weeks, if I was not up to 1200 lpd, I would be let go. Well, needless to say, I kept my other 2 jobs and kept Diskriter on hold for 2 weeks. When my time was up, the supervisor said I would not fit in. Thank God because I had no intensions of staying. I have well over 30,000 macros and easily make 12000 or more a day. I simply got a bad feeling about them and how they operated. The supervisor sent out daily messages threating MTs who did not make line count. Cherry picking is rampant and easily done, and I made an informed decision not to work for them. When the supervisor told me it would not work out, I simply agreed. She was astonished. I have 2 jobs and I am an Andrews grad. I had no intensions of working below my means with them. This is just my experience with them. I think this company is desperate from the emails I saw on their computer. Newbies if you graduated from Andrews, you will get better offers. Do your homework and do not be sucked in by this company. Experienced MTs can test them out and move on if need be. Good luck to all. I have to work my 2 jobs now.
Its been my experience, even when working in the hospital sm
that MTs with seniority usually get the worst work because it is the more difficult work and newbies usually cannot handle it. Unfortunately, thats the way it works in this field...the more experience you have, the more likely you are to get the crap work. That work has to get done too!
Recent hospital experience
My MIL is very ill and has been admitted to the same hospital ER and nephrology unit 6 times in the July/Aug. The staff comes in with that computer for EMR and they ask her the same questions over every time. I keep laughing at them and telling them, why don't you just pull up her past history from last time and not put her through this again? They seem unable to do this. What a joke.
That's your experience. The hospital I work for
has staff available 24/7. We have several major hospitals in the area that run 24/7 in most departments. Each area of the country is different. I have NEVER run out of work on the weekends and I transcribe everything from radiology, ops, to simple ER reports.
Diskriter - Anyone go from their employee to hospital employee with them?
Thinking about giving up on being their employee and applying for a hospital employee position through them, they have one in PA right now that looks good. How is it for scheduling? Do you keep your line rate or get whatever the hospital pays? Who manages those accounts, is it the same PM and DR that are on the other ones? I have DR and feel like she doesn't have a clue what she is doing and it is so annoying, but I just don't have the guts to let the company know she needs to step it up a notch because the transcriptionists are not happy under her. Are QA the same people or through the hospital. They have 1 QA that is constantly asking us questions on doctors and format, things we should be asking that QA person. Annoying that new people move up to QA but people who've been there 2 or 3 years get treated like dirt and jumped account to account.
Jewish is the main hospital, St. Mary's is another hospital under their management. (nm)

First for hospital, then outsourced still on same hospital work
and believe it or not, the hospital was so much easier. Had worked at the hospital for 11 years before they outsourced and then worked another 3+ years for the company they outsourced to. What a difference! The company had so many rules and regulations you could hardly keep up with them all, thousands of them, on the same account, mind you. The higher ups would not leave you alone, constant IMs about any and all. I have gotten to the age where I do not need all that and walked the other week. Have scheduled testing with another hospital for this month. Hope I make the cut, love the hospital work 1000 times more than a company.

Experience versus not as much experience
--same job should equal same pay?...Come back and talk to me in 20 years...
For the most part, old school MTs have a ton more to offer than a newbie, by virtue of the amount that they know. Most old school MTs can do just about any kind of report, because they learned the old way, they used books--Dorland's was a bible--not software and spellcheck, they worked in house, in the environment, they understand things that a new person who has only worked online with their word books, shorthand, macros and software just cant understand.. Why things are done in a certain way... Why it is so important that certain documents are treated a certain way. Why some reports are stat versus others. What you might flag for the hospital and why... When you think you know everything, esp as a newbie, you are doomed my friend.
Also, cont education is something that most old school MTs understand is a benefit for them and a gift to themselves...part of their commitment to themselves and their own education, not a commitment to being a certified MT, it is a personal thing, a standard.
If you don't understand that, I don't know what else to tell you.
Sure newbies can transcribe, it isn't rocket science, but they know what they know, if you know what I mean..(and that's about all they know) if they don't care to continue their education once they are out of MT school.
There's a little more to it than what you have stated here. If you consider yourself an MT machine.. you will burn out sooner than you think.

I am so sorry that is happening to you. Are you a single parent? I know how scary it can be to default on a mortgage. It happened to me back in early 90s before I started work for the hospital I am currently at. Your supervisor is not a very thorough supervisor. If she checked with most large hospitals, she would see things are done very differently for their at home MTs. My hospital pays for internet connection, provides equipment, and pay is very good. We don't have to do all that extra stuff for HIPPA either.
Your best bet now would be to try and find a national to work with, but that is scary too.

Sorry. Should have been a little clearer. Looking to meet some other hospital MTs out there. Curious to know... Do you find the same problems with your employer as MTs do with national companies? I have had some may MTs tell me they wouldn't work for hospital, but my hospital doesn't have a third of the problems nationals do. Fortunately for me, my hospital hires within a 3-state radius. For those who are more than 1 hour away, we have conference call meetings.

Probably 99% of the time I would say take the hospital job over the service - but in your case with having a CMT and that amount of experience, pay for production might be a better deal for you. I think you have to decide what is most important, the benefits or a higher salary. As far as security, even though the hospitals have a tendency to go with what looks good on paper budget-wise, the services can also be bought out and changed over so no guarantees either way. I do wonder if more hospitals won't work a little harder to keep some in-house MTs as more and more services sell them a bill of goods they cannot deliver. Geez, they have to wake up sometime, don't they?

I do ops too and I love those. Will you be happy giving those up? Will they be sticking you with long, boring discharge summaries? They get real boring, real fast.
Another thing...a friend of mine, CMT, PA and several other initials, went to work for hospital, which told her she would only have to work in-house for a short period of time. I believe it was six months. It took over a year. 45 miles is a long way to drive, especially if traffic is an issue.
Ask a LOT of questions.

I have worked as home based hospital Transcriptionist since 1990s. They recently took on a new platform and are outsourcing a great deal of our work. We are running out of work; the outsource company takes almost all of it. Our jobs are no longer secure.
