And expect to work long hours but somehow you only make peanuts.

Posted By: Oh yeah on 2006-01-02
In Reply to: Strictly Indian-ran, low pay, and difficult communication to say the least. - Let me tell ya!!

I suspect that they must not pay for spaces, headers, etc.. as you can work all day and somehow you barely have any lines. I smell a rat.. very suspicious to me that you could work so hard and it just never adds up.

How much can I expect to make the first year of MT work, around $20,000?
or more
You wont make any money with them. Expect to get ripped out. The hospital they do work for should...
be ashamed to sent their work to Indian companies like treat their employees like crap. You can bet the hospital pays full price, but once the MTs get their part, it is minimal. Dont go there!!
Won't work for peanuts
I am in total agreement with this statement. They want us to learn more and pay us less, and work odd ball shifts, and weekends, and pay less than min wage. Personally, I am refusing to take tests until someone calls me and tells me about the company, and what the pay range is and what shifts they are looking for; if the positions are all IC, and how long it takes to get paid. I am done with waiting a month to get paid, only to be screwed out of 2 weeks of pay when the company either merges or I leave because I can't make any money.

These companies need to hire recruiters that know what they are doing and know how to speak to people. They need to make sure the recruiters are MTs/Editors and can talk 'shop' to the people they are interviewing. I have had good experience with the recruiter at Future Net, she has been very nice, and has called me a # of times to get me tested, but unfortunately I don't have the correct footpedal and cannot afford to buy one just for a test. I have taken oodles of tests over the last several weeks, and have not heard one word from anyone, although I did get a passing score according to the computer generated score, which we have no way of knowing how they score these sometimes ridiculous tests. They take hours and hours as we all know and it's ridiculous to only do business thru e-mail and not speak to a human being, and to give every single person the same test, not everyone has the same skill set. And those companies that test editors for transcription, I refuse to take them, because it is not a true assessment of an editors skill set. And forget about SoftScript their test is the most convoluted test that I have ever taken with the most ridiculous questions on there. I have NEVER in 20 years seen some of the words on that test with all the thousands of records I've either transcribed or edited.

We all as a group of MTs and editors need to take a stand, there is a voice in numbers and start standing up for ourselves, if enough of us refuse to test and demand to speak to someone, these companies will have no other choice but to change their recruiting policies and start treating us more like human beings than warm bodies in chairs.
I DO keep track, and work long hours, but only
If I say I can't do the minimum line count in 8 hours, they say I'm too slow. But if I eliminate quality (by not proofing or not correcting grammar, and just typing verbatim) then I hear about that, too. They just say to work harder, work faster.

The MTSO's only care about their precious TAT and volume. What we have to do to ourselves in order to accomplish THEIR goals is of no importance to them.

The only way it ever will be is if someday they happen to get put under a microscope like other fraudulent US businesses have, lately.

What I wouldn't give to see the fat-cats at AHDI up in front of Congress trying to explain themselves some fine day. Could happen.
You are an IC - they can't make you work all those hours unless you want to. sm
I'd just tell them that I was cutting back to X number of hours per day.
I work 1 job, about 36 hours/week and make at
least that amount, plus have vacation and PTO, also an employee so they pay taxes.   I found that working multiple account keep me from making money because I have to learn so many doctors and be aware of the different formats/platforms and account specific stuff.  I used to work a bunch of jobs part-time and was working 7 days a week and lots and lots of hours and not making very much money.   If I worked the same hours on one account I could have easily made $80,000+/year.
Just wondering - how many hours do you normally have to work to make your 500 lines? Thanks! NM

Not so easy when you make top pay and work days and hours of

I've been able to make my hours. No, you do not lose insurance if work should run out. nm

I work at AMphion part-time and make as much there in 20 hours as I do at my FT job in 40

When you run out of work doyou have to make up lines/hours to keep bennies? (nm)

How long before I can expect to hear --sm
from them? It hasn't been that long, but I'm anxious to talk with the recruiter.
They don't expect U to make lines during first 90 days
Hang in there, it will get better, it takes time.
How much can you realistically expect to make daily doing SR?? NM

I doubt you will make enough money in 5 hours a week to make

Sorry, I work 15 hours a day 5 days a week and 5 hours the other 2, when I come here I dont proof.

You can at OSI as long as you don't record the hours

the day has 24 hours, I work only 6-8 hours, so, lots of time to post...nm

Not convinced that anyone is happy making peanuts when they made $70,000 sm
no matter what year...........if you made $70,000 typing and now you do VR... keep telling yourself you are happy now making peanuts.
I am able to get my lines/hours in as long as I flex a little within my time window. (sm)
Are you hiring on now or just looking?
Webmedx MTs - Do you make your hours? sm
I'm rather new and finding it hard to get my 35 hours in due to running out of work. I'm on multiple accounts, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

So are you able to get your hours? If so how?

If not, are there threats over losing insurance?

thanks,

Worried
Now you can not make your lines in 9 hours!
x
If you can't make 1000 lines in 8 hours,
in the wrong profession.
12+ hours a day, 30 yrs exp, and can't make ends meet?
How many lines do you type in that 12+ hours a day? What is your line rate? Get incentives?

Even if you typed 100 lines an hour, that's 1200 lines a day at 8 cpl that would $96 a day.

What in the world are you paying for rent?! lol
Now you can not make your lines in 9 hours! More time for 2nd Job.
x
Don't expect someone to do the work for you
looking for a company isn't THAT hard. You do the research, have interviews, weigh pros and cons. Be self-reliant and stop whining *oh, no one wants to help me*. IMO
I make about $1,500 a month working about 20 hours per week.

Believe me, I'm not bragging or slamming anybody at all.  No way.  I'm frustrated with my own income because I'd like to make more.  I'm willing to put in more hours to do it, too.  Honestly, I'm not that fast.  I have one very small local account and one small MTSO I subcontract for.  None of it is verbatim, it's clean up the grammar as you go, which totally slows me down.

I won't work for a national any more because I couldn't make enough money there.  I wasn't willing to tough it out for three months until I could make their line counts, especially when they had me on their worst accounts, pools of hundreds of dictators per hospital so I couldn't use my expander, and a new account every week.

I've said before that if I'm going to do MT, it's going to be on my terms.  I won't chain myself to a desk or be "on call" all day long waiting for work to come in.  Nationals don't pay you to sit there and wait for work.  That's bull.  Being on call IS working.  Other businesses pay their "on call" people at least minimum wage.  They skirt around the issue trying to use SE and IC terminology, but it's just a way of paying us less to be at their beck and call.

Don't give up on MT entirely.  You'll find your fit.  It just takes some searching.

WMX-ers, please humor me. Are we seroiusly supposed to make up enough hours sm

to complete the required work week when there is no work?  Before everyone jumps on me saying that I am lazy, don't want to work, need to ask for more accounts, etc., give me a break.  I am quite new to the company, and I rely on a full-time work week for my benefits for my family.  I already have 5 accounts and have asked for more.  All are out of work (or so I am told).  I have four small children, so working all hours of the night and the wee hours of the morning is not possible on a daily basis (but I am willing to do what I can to get my hours in).

I am asking an honest question here:  Is there no leeway at all during the extremely slow holiday months?  It is bad enough that I will pull in less money, but even worse that I could lose my benefits.  YES I know it is slow at all companies during the holiday season. YES I know I could get a job somewhere else. If a current or past WMX-er could please just give me some insight, I would greatly appreciate it. :-) I got up earlier today to get a jump on things, and I ran out of work earlier!  LOL  I ran out of work at 10 a.m. (again).

10-15 an hour for 8 hours is better than nothing for 8 hours when there is no work.

I make 1300 per month 10 hours per week (IC) extra job

I don't work at Amphion but it's amazing that they expect

how long to make $$$
How long did it take you to get to your current line count?? I work with a pool of doctors/clinics so it is next to impossible to fully utilize my InstantText expander. I try to cut myself some slack since I've only been doing this for 5 months, but how long does it take to make some decent $$?? Right now, on my absolute BEST days, I average about 110-120 lines per hour and can't seem to break through that. Any ideas or input??
Low line counts - difficult to make 1200 lines in 8 hours. sm
25 years of experience as an Acute Care MT and I had a difficult time getting 200 lph with Bayscribe. Any other accounts with other companies, I could easily transcribe 350-400 lph. Not at MDI - very difficult. I loved the account, but again it was difficult to get a decent line count.

It doesn't matter if you pay me 11 cpl if I can't get a decent line count. Couldn't take the 3 x day e-mails either.
Bayscribe stinks!
They are okay to work for, but do not expect a big incentive. Their scale is about average.
The biggest issue right now is trying to get e-mails answered on a regular basis. You better like to work alone without much feedback or interaction because that is how it will be.
Loyalty to Companies Who Have No Work and Expect a Schedule from YOU

There have been many discussions about MT's sitting around waiting for work to file into their queues.. many being told to get more than a few accounts and work on their backups (which, we all know, is someone's primary account)  when their primary is out of work.. so we go 'round in circles.

Then we have discussions about companies putting us in work pools as opposed to assigning us work daily...

I have been sitting here thinking, if I were a painter, wanted to paint fences, and I showed up with my brush and paint bright and early in the morning, and was told to come back tomorrow, the fence has already been painted, but there will be another fence ready to paint tomorrow, please come back, we want you to paint our fences.. I say, OK, I understand, and so I come back tomorrow and when I get there I see that half of the fence has been painted already, someone came before me and painted it, even though I was promised the work of painting the fence.  They say, try again tomorrow.  How many days would you show up to paint a fence? Every day? Don't you (eventually) feel like an idiot standing there with your brush and paint with nothing to do??

Does the company owe you any loyalty at all??  If they don't want your services, why don't they just say so instead of keeping you coming back ready to paint every day?  Then when it DOES get busy, they call and say WHERE IS EVERYBODY??? DONT YOU CARE ABOUT PAINTING THE FENCE?  Like we havent been standing there with our brushes all week waiting to paint.

What I don't understand is the lack of shame from the people who behave this way.   Once in a while things happen..NOT AS A MATTER OF BUSINESS.

I really don't understand the logic of the people who have no problem with this.  You do understand that by doing this, you are simply helping these companies to continue in this fashion, not feeling that they owe you ANYTHING.

Overhiring is really the finaly insult.  If you don't see that.. you are closing your eyes.

I can do that as I expect a lot of places are holding off hiring now because work does tend to get a
little slow at this time of the year.  I can manage with what I have until January.
Does "being around here long enough" make one a psychic?
sign or message is in this person's post that makes you know who they are? I would imagine that there are many po'd MTSOs out there. It could be any one of them. I'd be po'd as well if I had to deal with the likes of some of you folks on a daily basis.
resumes do not take that long, especially when you have had only 1 job..make it with your word sm
processor and send.
How long before they make you part-time?
I have had a terrible couple of months.  The first time I didn't make my line counts a person from HR emailed me and suggested that I type a bit faster.  Gee....why hadn't I thought of that?
They may be brand new. Ask them how long in business if you make contact. nm
s
Well, I was thinking I couldn't make enough $$ but I truly didn't stay long enough..SM
to really give it a chance. I know that now. I started but got cold feet and went back to my old job. I really liked their benefits, and I'd be willing to give it time, this time, to get more used to the account and system, etc.

I was just wondering if they ever hired anyone back. Thanks for asking and not flamning. :)
Totally unrealistic as long as Indians make it worth their while.
nm
I make 4 cents a line, work part and make
over $500 a week on part.
That's exactly what I was going to say. Yes, I work at least 12 hours a day, sometimes 15 hours
to get all of my line count in because I have so many interruptions in my day.  There is no way I would tell my company this nor expect them to pay me OT that they never asked you to do. Unless, I was called by my supervisor and asked to work extra for OT, I would never just take it upon myself to work and expect to be paid.  If you were not authorized to work OT, then your not getting paid. Point blank. I do not work at TT, but I have worked at enough jobs, at home as an MT and otherwise outside of home, that all have the same policy, your paid OT when your asked to work it. It's it is just a case of not being able to get your required line count in 8 hours, then maybe your in the wrong profession or possibly just the wrong company/account for you. This just seems bizarre to me. Just tell yourself, your not getting paid for OT because they aren't approving it so don't work it. Again, if you were asked to work OT, told it would be OT, and then they ask you not to record it, I'd pitch a fit, but from what I see, you've done this on your own.
Why would anyone work 8 hours a week. The poster above said 16 or 24 hours a week.
:
All nationals I work for you only work 40 hours unless they approve overtime.
x
Isnt it sad. We just want to go to work every day on our shift, work our 8 hours and be done with it
Instead I sit here hours hoping the Indians leave some work for us so we can at least get our 8 hours in. Nothing like logging onto you shift and being told no work. Nice.
they cant "make you work certain hours" but they can find someone that is willing to work them
If not, they dont have to hire you as IC or anything for that matter. So yes it is perfectly legal.

If she hires you as an IC and it doesn't state in your contract when she needs that particular IC coverage and she then dictates what hours you work, she cannot do that.

But she can refuse to hire you if you don't provide the coverage that she is looking for.

I make more than that with Spheris but never have work. I would rather make $1.25 and have work. s
My SIL works for KS, and she gets paid double for linked reports too. Where do you get $2.25? I am ready to leave Spheris.
What hours do you work?
Also, which days? I was thinking of applying with this company. Maybe you could switch your schedule around a little.
They do want you to work the hours (sm)
you have committed to.  If you do that, you shouldn't have any problems making your lines - minimum 6600 per week.
