amen sista!
I, too, edit India reports and day after day correct their errors that definitely would have had me fired in the blink of any eye. For instance, one error was Patient is a wheechair. It should have actually been: Patient is a realtor. This isn't an isolated incident, but happens report after report after report. These reports have already gone to the hospital and are corrected after the fact. With the advent of electronic signature, docs do not read their reports anymore, and do not realize the danger they are in should they end up in court. I doubt you'll see an Indian MT/editor/manager around to take responsibility for the error. In this day and age, I don't even think I'd want to be a doctor unless I KNEW FOR A FACT where my dictation was being transcribed.
Amen sista...
I also love the one-liner emails that just say can you tell me about the job? I put everything in my ads that an MT needs to know and if someone won't take the time to even read the ad, I know the attention to detail is not going to be there. Also, if I post 3-5 years of experience, that doesn't mean I will accept 6 months because you list I type fast. Keep the resume short and to the point as well. I do not have time to read through a 10-page resume that tells me your children's names and what activities you are involved in with them, how many pets you have, etc. Be specific, provide the full name of the company and the contact information. I am wary if I get a list of employers without contacts and then the provided reference list only lists personal references. We aren't going to contact every employer on the list, especially your present employer, until we know more about you and you have tested, etc.
Regarding testing, don't you just love the excuses people give for not completing the test? My favorite ones are:
1. My power went out.
2. My phone went out.
3. My 2-year-old spilled Coke into my keyboard.
4. You misrepresented the test and didn't tell me there would be foreign doctors.
5. Don't you have any other files you can test me on? These are hard.
6. I fell and hurt my wrist/arm/leg/head.
Amen to that, sista!
I like my time off too!
Amen Sista!
Especially in this business. Never, ever seen so many witches with bad itches. Thank goodness I'm no longer in this crap hole of a profession. My regrets go to each and every one of you. Send the crap to India, who cares, they can have it!
Amen, Sista, that is what I was
trying to say. When I'm knocking down about $800 in a week and I'm part-time, I find absolutely nothing to complain about!!!!!! Not to mention the fact that I'm not bothered with 100 or so stupid emails from all levels of management every day as some companies do. Just give me the work and leave me alone to do it and I'm a happy camper.
Amen, sista!
I'm not going to start a ruckus by saying what I think of most, NOT ALL, of the QA people these days, especially those with the useless CMT initials. No jealousy here...BTDT, I quit with that nonsense when the AAMT, or whatever they call themselves now, quit supporting the MTs, if in fact they ever did.
Amen sista!
She probably works for one of the companies that posts these false advertisements.

Amen sista' preach it! :) NM
Me too, Jill!
Add to all you mentioned that the testing is sometimes ridiculous, testing the wrong thing for 'transcription' work.
The best type of test are voice files - which allow the service to see if you can transcribe, and allows 'you' to sample the job. This of course, assumes the voice files pertain to the actual job... and not just sample files. Still voice files are way better than written tests.
Frankly, (MTSOs are you listening?) a good old fashioned person- to-person interview is the best indicator to me whether the potential opportunity is a good one. If the service can't take a few minutes to 'speak' to you, it's a fair indicator of how responsive they will be to you once hired.
I also refrain from taking any test that will take more than 30 minutes total.
Not Jill, but can probably help
By platforms, they mean systems like Scribes, Emdat INscribe, and other programs that some companies use. Some companies just have you type directly into Word or WP which is what some people prefer while others prefer the platforms. It's all a matter of personal choice. I've worked in some platforms that were just as user friendly as working directdly in WP and others where there was a lag issue with finding demographics, etc.
Again, there is no perfect fit for everyone, just as in any job.
Exactly, Jill. You got it. Glad to see that there are...
still some MTs with good reading comprehension skills.
Jill's advice
You have given very good advice. I've worked about as much as an employee as I have an IC. I've made no more as an IC than I make as an employee. I will not recommend a company nor will I recommend an MT to a company; I've been burned on both accounts. A company that might make me happy might make your life miserable. People change, companies change and not always for the better either. This can happen very quickly.
I agree, I would read everything I could find on a company. While there are always disgruntled employees, where there is smoke there is also usually fire. That does not necessarily mean that a given MT might not be happy with that company. The only way to know for sure is to try it for yourself. Don't waste time. I could tell within an hour whether it was a mistake and if it was, I moved on and didn't look back. All I can say, is don't expect others to do your homework for you. It can't be done. Best of luck to all who are unhappy in their work.

I make far more than 200 lph at MDI using Bayscribe. Have you tried MDI?

Jill put nail on head
She did not necessarily hone in on the education and having an ear...I TOTALLY agree with being able to FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS, no online surfing, emails, phone calls, laundry, chit-chatting, etc. That's the hardest part for me. I've been an MT for 36 years and I now work from home on production, doing QA for almost 10 years. I'm having a dickens of a time getting a good line count because of inability to discipline myself. Everyday I tell myself I'm going to go better and then bam! I'm back goofing off.
DISCIPLINE and FOCUS is the key.
Amen Sister, Amen! Excellent post. (nm)

I've got mine, too, sista, but whereas you care nothing except about yourself,
there are those of us here who understand what is happening in this forcing of being creditialed. You obviously don't have a clue, but that is generally the case with the me attitude so prevalent in today's world, an attitude you have displayed magnificently, BTW. I got my CMT because I WANTED to, not because I was FORCED to. Will being forced to be credentialed make you a better MT? NO. No more than being called an MD makes you a good or even excellent doctor. And boy, do we know some really stupid, careless, arrogant, physicians who ought to be in prison today instead of practicing medicine? Doesn't really make any difference that they have MD as a title, does it?
AMEN!
:-)
AMEN!
You would think in order to succeed, they would want to treat their good MTs like gold, and help the newbies out. Instead there is nothing but backstabbing. Having said that, there ARE some good people still working there, why they have not been run off yet, I have no idea. But my hat goes off to them, the good guys fighting the good fight...you know who you are! As for SD, she was always extremely nice and encouraging to me. It was when she stepped down when all hell broke loose and the company went to the crappers.

AMEN!!!!!!!
The whole "lets blame the IC" is really getting boring. I too am an IC and work my scheduled hours. I always call before logging in after my scheduled hours to see if I am needed, and I am always told "yes". It is the end of the pay period and guess what employees......IM OUT OF WORK TOO.
AMEN!!!!

This person's obsession with recruiters and the fact that he/she seems to be perched just waiting for the opportunity to throw out that question is a little disturbing. Enough already! Maybe, just MAYBE the majority of these people really are MTs who are happy with the co. they work for. And if some of them are recruiters, big hairy deal! And no, I'm NOT one - geesh!
Amen!!!!!

Ha, we must work for the same company!. I'm thoroughly disgusted. Because of reckless overhiring we have to be a slave to the computer for 14 hours a day 7 days a week just to meet quota or face severe punishment. The holiday excuse is old and a bunch of bull. But what do they care, they're salaried.
Amen!

We all know there are good companies, and there are bad companies. We each have to decide that on our own experiences. It is fine to share personal experiences but that should be done in a professional manner - not with the personal digs. I don't know the first thing about Keystrokes either, but in my personal opinion, some of these posts are not helping the reputation of the company. If it's good, you don't have to defend it. One or two people on this board are not going to ruin the company's reputation.
Amen.
