I'm not an expert but I have digital through my cable company (one line) and through another company (two lines).  To be digital means through the internet.  You don't need to be connected to your computer directly but you do need to have high-speed internet.  My cable service runs through my existing land line phone lines at this time.  I can switch either of my other phone services to this and will be doing that shortly and disconnecting my cable phone service.


I found this - To make our point again, regardless of the phone service name that the service providers use, they are all the same type of service. All of them require a Broadband High Speed Internet connection and your voice is sent digitally from your phone over your Broadband connection as VoIP packets.  Much of it depends on your Internet provider, speed of connection, etc.
