I will share this about the MTSO I work for. I called her late last Wednesday night after Church and told her I was compelled to help out with Hurricaine Katrina in some way and an opportunity arose for a small group from my Church to go to Louisianna this coming week. Would she be able to cover my work. She told me no problem without any hesitation and even donated money for the trip.
And I am sure there are plenty of good companies out there to work for. To compare us to migrant workers is just not right.

Anyone work for a small MTSO?
Compared to larger companies?
Anyone pay less than $800 a month for family insurance?? I work for a small MTSO
and it's not like I make a ton anyway, but the insurance is so high for my family. I feel like I'm just working for the insurance. My husband is self-employed so he obviously doesnt have insurance through his job to provide this so it is up to me and I'm dying here. Any suggestions? We have tried individual plans but it is a fortune for high deductible and yucky coverage. I need to maybe find a larger company to work for where the benefits are a little better.
I work as an IC for a small company and
I have worked for nationals and always hated having hundreds of different doctors and all the different account specifics, and above all searching for the demographics that I didn't get paid for. Now I download from a FTP site, transcribe in Word and send it back within 24 to 48 hours (depending on the account). I currently have 3 different doctors that I am very comfortable with and can breeze through. I have no regrets about leaving the big nationals.
I also work as an IC for a small company
(without a contract too, so you are not alone, but working for me also). I just let my company know when I will be gone with plenty of notice (at least one month ahead of time), especially if I will be gone for an extended period such as a week or longer. Have never had any problems.
I work for a small company and
some of the clients have actually threatened to go with the larger companies that offshore to get cheaper rates. I've had to take a pay cut in order to keep the account from going to India. The clients will go where they get the better deal. Many of us will take a pay cut because of the competition regardless of how big the company is. I don't think anywhere is safe. You have to work harder to make up for the cpl loss.
Must be a small company. I have never talked to the owner of the company I work for. sm
He wouldn't have time. Why would someone talk directly to the MTSO? Most do not know (or care) about the details just the big picture.
I work for a small company in Iowa
The woman that owns the company is crazy. She treats physical therapy like it's acute care. They are office visit notes and she acts like they are Op notes and the doctor is breathing down her back waiting for them to be typed. The physical therapist could care less ------- it's an exercise class lady - get over it. At 6 cpl she wants a miracle.
I would ABSOLUTELY NOT work for a company that is associated with her. nm
Small but growing company, great to work for
Really sharp owner, great QA.
Need good small company to work for with flexible schedule - e-mail me.nm
nm
but mgmt told me they outsourced some work to a small company at times.
There is no reason for me to lie about this.
I am NOT talking about offshoring, but the company whom they outsource to may offshore . . . I have no idea about that. But straight from the horse's mouth, they have outsourced to a small MTSO before.
You can notice how the work dries up all of a sudden when they turn it over to the service and we have no work.
TT mgmt may not tell that they outsource today, but they definitely told me about 9 months ago when I asked when the work was low. From the way the jobs disappear occasionally, I think it happens quite often.
Awesome small company! Paid on time every 2 weeks. Plenty of work!
Owner is great. I would recommend this company to anyone who wanted to be paid what they are worth and paid on time!
Never would. BUT I am not an MTSO. I work as an employee for a company and I see everything sm
that I mentioned in my first post routinely. I don't mean to include all by no means, but don't try to make this out as a dream job. It has already been done and that is just one of of the reasons we are in the sad state we are in.
I work for a small national. I have steady work, usually
extra if I want it. I make 10 cpl as an employee, get vacation, 401K matching, PTO, wonderful QA, lots of ESL dictators but mostly decent ones, direct deposit, no IM, no nasty e-mails, no phone calls asking me to work extra day after day. Saying that MTs are surprised at how much money they make because they have steady work even though the line rate is low sounds like a line a used car salesman would use. A low line rate is a low line and an insult, especially since without the MTs you wouldn't be able to pay your bills.
Just because everyone else sees to be going to India is like the saying you parents would say if everyone else jumped off the bridge .... Many companies sell out, but you don't HAVE to sell out. You choose to get more bang from your buck but I've seen the work that comes back from overseas and I would never put my name to it.
You might can fool some of the people some of the time, but it won't fly with me.
The bid has nothing to do with consistancy of work. MTSO cannot control how cosistant work is.

I work for a small national and use FTP, also work for
a small local and use a website. If you check the job boards you'll see lots of companies use FTP.
Where I work is for a small
locally owned company that is not large enough to attract the interest of the poachers from offshore. Neither is it large enough to accommodate additional people at this time. Just a few local people doing our work quietly. The point is, I found it, and you can find places like this, too. Hint: Don't look to the big companies. They have no loyalty to their workers. In my book, smaller is better! Doing research is part of being a good MT. And although I make a penny less than the vaunted 11 cpl from MDI, I actually earn more per hour, as I do not have to deal with a constant flurry of ESLs and equipment that is so old and unreliable that it is a headache just to log on each morning.
Small MTSO
I am a small MTSO and I have two part timers that work for me. I try to allow them to make a good living but there are costs of running a business. I do the pick up and deliveries, I print, I buy the paper, toners, etc. I do the invoicing. I do the customer service. I do the QA, etc. So when I make 2 to 3 cents a line, that is sometimes barely $5 to $7 an hour after gas, paper, etc. I keep my line charge reasonable -- 0.11 to 0.12 and that allows me to pay 0.8 cents per line. But if my gals use their brains to use word expanders, templates, etc. they can make $16 to $24 an hour (200 to 300 lines per hour) which to me is fair. I pay them on time often first and sometimes wait for the check to come in. But you guys we do not make a lot when subcontracting out. But if a document is 400 lines I make $8 to $12 for the report and that is before all my expenses. So we are not jiving any of you.
To Small MTSO
No suggestions here except to keep up the great work and appreciation for your team.
I agree, don't waste your time on the ignorant's on this board that think everyone is out to screw the MT...it's a sad fact, but there are some who just have such blackened lenses to see through. It sounds like you really appreciate your team and there are more employers out there like you, really there are.
TO: Small MTSO
see above post, it got posted in the wrong spot somehow.
What small MTSO we could
apply for work there too
Look for a small MTSO
like the one who posted above who still values his/her MTs. I guarantee you there is no real shortage of work if you took the greed factor out of the big and greedy MTSOs. They don't give two hoots in the wind about you and they'll offshore, contract with MT schools, whatever it takes to increase their bottom line profit. They couldn't care less if you and your family starve out. By working for a small, and sometimes struggling MTSO, you will help them and yourself. I guarantee you also that you will make more money working for 6 cpl and actually having abundant work rather than working for 15 cpl and sitting in front of a blank screen all day.
I work for a small hospital...
which is going through some changes (selling out to another organization). My question to you is what area are you in. I have been trying to get an hourly rate for my area for a while now and can not get an answer. I also get paid per minute, not production per se, just a certain amount for every minute of dictation I do. I do the basic four which also includes radiology and psychiatry. A little over a third of my work is radiology. Please e-mail me.
Absolutely - always work available. nm
x
Currently work there and absolutely one
of the best jobs I have had as an MT. They are flexible with their time, have holiday PTO and regular PTO. Major plus, only 1 account. I know there are some negative posts around about them, but everyone in my group is respectful and the communication is great.
There is absolutely no work right know, so I don't
think they'll be hiring right now.
14.5 cpl National, 16.0 cpl small MTSO
Happy, both accounts are California accounts which is a higher pay!!!!
how do we work it? Easy answer - work for another company. That happened with the company
I was working for. I would wake up at 4 a.m. AND ON THE WEEKENDS TOO because they needed "coverage" supposedly and I would sit until 9:30 or noon without any work. Sorry, but my rent of $1450/month could not be paid with only $57/day. So I got another job and when I got the equipment and everything, then I quit for the other employer.
Absolutely. It is SE status - you can work as much as you want.
Statutory employee status - make as much money as you want with no limitations. Plenty of work all of the time!
Good luck!
Absolutely positive. I work as an SE for
are withheld, only Social Security and Medicare taxes.
I currently work for them, and absolutely love them!
Pay is direct deposit and always on time. The account I'm on is relatively easy, although there are a few ESLs. I've been there 6 months now, and am very happy.
I work there and absolutely love it. You
set your schedule each week in 2-hour blocks each day. You have a minimum production per day you have to do and you need to work sometime within the blocks of time you schedule yourself.
Amphion, Etransplus or small MTSO?
Pros and cons to any of these? Thanks.
You're definitely in the spotlight with a small MTSO.
Easier to run under the radar with a big company, but I'm sure it just depends on the company. Though, generally, I have found small ones have close watch on QA.
Being a small MTSO myself, the second attorney is correct sm
Honestly, here in the Northeast, the courts will not uphold any noncompete clause written in that manner, signed or not signed.
If it affects your ability to make an income and provide for yourself, it will not hold up in a court of law in the great US of A.
Small MTSO and bad business practices
I think the reason for late/bounced checks is exactly due to a lot of small MTSOs not keeping business and personal money separate and they do not have a reserve to fall back on in case something happens.
I had one that did not keep her personal finances separate from business and some government agency (she was having legal problems) went in and wiped out her bank account...she still owes me big bucks and that was several years ago. Unfortunately, I kept working (2 months with no pay, stupid) believing things would get better and believed the excuses and lies before I found out what was going on and quit, but could not collect because she had no money left and then she just dropped out of sight (rumor has it she changed her name and moved to a different state).
Another one had the same situation as far as not separating business from personal money and bounced payroll checks (I quit when the first check bounced, lesson learned from the first time). I finally got my money from that one after months of waiting. Needless to say, I will no longer work as IC for small MTSOs. They will lie to you when you ask if they have a separate business account and a line of credit or reserve to ensure payroll is on time even if client does not pay on time or they themselves get into financial trouble.
BEWARE THE CONTRACT THAT SAYS YOU GET PAID WHEN I GET PAID because it means just that and you will have no legal recourse of getting your hard-earned money, definite red flag.
I inquired and it's just a gal running a small business looking for IC work. nm
..
I work for JLG and they are just fine. They treat you well with small little perks.
So they pay by 65 characters. So does most everyone else. They pay on time and are reliable which is better than I can say for some others around here.
Any small companies in Michigan that are nice to work for. nm

Work for Shapin and absolutely HAPPY about it!!
Finally found my place.
$2.50/report own account - .17/line small MTSO
I worked for a small local MTSO for 10+ years, through
3 owners, and I trained the last 2. The MTSO is a man. He is extremely disorganized, just wants the job done, not interested in providing samples, doctor's lists, etc. Frequently doesn't answer e-mails, not recognition for MT week. I lost 3 close family members within a short time, never got a card, a plant, or I'm sorry. When I worked there I did acute care and I didn't need samples, lists, because I had been there for so long I had the info or knew where to get it, but when this MTSO came on the scene things changed. He lost the account to MQ, who has since lost it to CyMed, and he got a bunch of clinic accounts. I left because I didn't want to do clinics, but I would occasionally do overflow for him. He was always calling me because I wasn't doing something right, but he never gave me samples or answered my questions, so I did the best I could under those circumstances. Pay is 7 cpl per gross line, which is 1 cpl more than I started out making 10+ years ago. Never hear from him unless there is a problem or he needs a favor. Checks are mailed and even though he is about 12 miles away it can take 3 to 4 days to get my check.
I currently work for a small national (about 50 MTs). Pay is better, MT week is recognized, my BD is recognized, Christmas is recognized. Not that I expect these things but it is nice to feel appreciated. I get an e-mail or phone call every few months thanking me for all my hard work and going above and beyond when they get in a bind, etc. Pretty much left alone to work otherwise, but provided with any information needed to do my job. I have direct deposit.
I briefly worked for YOG for a few months prior to their selling to MQ and it was the most disorganized company. I didn't know who did what, couldn't get samples, had to frequently call for work because even though I was cleared by QA and should have been getting pooled work I wasn't. Deducts if too many blanks. I still had them calling me to work extra 6 months after I left.
I work for Shapin as lead QA and absolutely LOVE my job..sm
The owner is the most fair employer Ii have ever had!! She is kind to personal situations. She will help you out any way she can. I make really, really good money working for her. She is looking for more editors, as the company is growing a great deal. If you want more info, please feel free to contact me at MaryC_RI285@msn.com.
You can believe those on this board saying NO WORK at Transtech ! Absolutely true !!
Getting worse and worse every day. They are going to VR at a VERY FAST PACE, which pays so little you cannot survive on the money UNLESS you work 60 hours a week OR are one of the supe's fav's that get the better dictators.
There is always an excuse by TT as to the low work, but remember that doesn't pay our creditors. Work disappears in large chunks when were at getting almost out of TAT (if ever) so it is going somewhere.
TT is turning out to be like every other MT company out there - more and more executives/supervisors to pay and not a single penny raise for the MT -- much less provide work for the MT's on a consistent basis -- not near consistent basis.
Absolutely, sends work to India, Phillipines...sm
She's something alright, sending work offshore instead of paying someone in the US a workable wage. Name of company is Another Medical Must...owned by Renee Lella....look her up on Google and see how that's worked for her in the past, with a major leak of patient records due to dealing with the Indian company and their MTs. She trains her MTs most of the time using her cell phone in the car while doing errands or picking up kids...horrible. Bad, bad experience, never again. She looks at this board occasionally and still posts for job openings once in a while, but always under an alias or different name, sometimes maria...sometimes another name. Shifty.
Between the outsourcing and overhiring, there is absolutely no work for anyone/anything American, pe
nm
Absolutely - I work off FTP and have a 24-hour window to return files.
I work my own schedule daily and keep my TAT. It is that simple. No big deal. I download my files late in the evening, transcribe the next day and upload them late in the evening.
Whatever works!
As an IC I let the MTSO where I work
know when I can work on a day to day basis. I have no committment for # of lines or hours each week/pay period. If I can work, I let them know how much work I can take (they assign it). Sometimes I work 7 days straight, sometimes I take a week off, sometiesm I work every other day, just WHENEVER I want. If there is no work, then I don't work. This is, I believe, what a true IC job is.
If the pay is truly 7 or 7.5 cpl, as an MTSO it seems odd you would work for such. sm
It is quite noble for you to work outside your service so that others in your company can have work -- I applaud you for your selflessness and consideration to those depending on you -- but ultimately, all of us, no matter how much we care about others, we have to take care of ourselves. Unless you live in some place that has an incredibly low cost of living, and I cannot imagine where that would even be anymore, I cannot think that such a low wage would provide enough for you.
I guess a lot of us ARE angry -- why wouldn't we be? Wages have gone down to a pittance. Companies advertise they want the best MTs with scads of experience, then offer us a wage that even a newbie should turn down. And perhaps we are all a bit cynical/hardened about the posts on here, because there HAVE been scams with management/leads double posting, misleading, etc. In 1983, I made 10 cents per GROSS line ... now here we are. I think mostly I am scared. I am 50 years old ... where will I be 10 or even 5 years from now? I read an article online where dumpster diving was becoming quite the vogue, but I shudder to think that is what is next.
WEBMEDX???? It's a small national, right? Benefits, running out of work, what kind of accounts,
flexible schedule (as in working EVERY weekend mandatory?
Any opinions on the company would be appreciated. Found some in the archives but all mostly from 2004 and 1 recent post but not much info. Thanks.
