It can't disappear altogether unless your investments are totally worthless, and that is not possible in most company 401K's. The one exception to this would be 401Ks that allow you to invest 100% in company stock, as was the case with some of the Enron employees when that company went under. That is the only scenario where you could lose all your money, and that would not apply to the Spheris 401K. What you are describing is not possible. If I were you, I'd get on the phone to the 401K administrator. There is either something wrong with your statement or something wrong with the way you are interpreting it.
