I totally agree with you about the bad apples. I do QA for a company that has done just that. We have started to weed out those that are doing substandard work, are reviewing thier work line by line, tracking the changes and then emailing them the corrections. All the good apples only get blanks filled in or spot checked. QA honestly gets paid very little and I don't know what company you work for, but they're out of their minds to have a QA department basically re-doing the transcription that they're paying the MT to do (at least, those who are not doing it correctly). What is the point? I have worked as an MT for almost eight years now and in QA for almost two - I just don't get where companies hire people that can't do the work and then turn around and give it to QA to fix! Why not just hire the good apples to begin with? I guess you're not alone in being in the dark about how things work because that makes no sense to me at all!
